Varsity comes up with fitness centre

AMRITSAR: With its academic session set to begin next week, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has established a world-class fitness centre on its premises.

With its academic session set to begin next week, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has established a world-class fitness centre on its premises.

Built on 3,000 square feet, the fitness centre has been constructed with a cost of Rs 1 crore. University officials have got placed modern machines to create interest of students in sports.

In the absence of proper gymnasium, the students were forced to shell out more money and visit fitness centres away from the main campus. The gym is available for faculty, employees, students and outsiders at a nominal fee. The main objective is to encourage students to make them health conscious, physically fit along with their studies.

Housed in the building of the Dean Students Welfare of the university, the fitness centre has been divided into multiple zone, such as cardio zone, strength zone and free exercise zone besides treadmill, skill mill, cross trainer, compact cable cross, leg press, hip abduction among others. Three qualified trainers will be appointed to provide proper training workout and attendant for take care of the machines.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Jaspal Singh Sandhu said, “The idea is to provide a space to students for physical activities. A student can’t excel without with sound body and mind. It is important for people to be healthy.”

“We want our students to focus on a healthy lifestyle rather than be involved in any kind of drug activity,” he added.
