Covid-19 toll crosses 200 mark in Ludhiana district

The number of deaths in Ludhiana district today crossed the double century mark after 13 people lost their lives taking the toll to 207. Seven new micro-containment zones were also declared today. As many as 181 patients tested positive for the disease today. From 1 to 13 August, 119 people lost their lives to coronavirus. At present, 15 people are on ventilator.

First death in the city was reported on March 30. In April, the total number of deaths were four followed by eight in May. In June, the number rose to 20 while in July, the total deaths reported were 82 and shockingly in August (within 13 days), the toll reached 207.

Maximum number of fatalities — 185 — have been reported from Ludhiana (Urban). In Ludhiana (Rural), six deaths each have been reported from Khanna and Jagraon, four from Payal and three each from Raikot and Samrala. The case fatality rate in the city is three per cent.

Those who lost their lives include a 26-year-man and a 34-year-old woman from Dashmesh Nagar and Noorwala Road, respectively. The Dashmesh Nagar patient was suffering from diabetes and the other was anaemic, obese and had hypothyroidism.

An 80-year-old patient from New Upkar Nagar also succumbed to the virus. He was admitted to Deepak Hospital and was hypertensive. A 70-year-old and a 71-year-old patient also died. One was suffering from coronary artery disease and other was having high blood pressure. Others, who lost battle to the virus were in the 50 to 60 years age group and had co-morbidities like blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, TB and obesity.

Today, 68 people tested positive at the flu corner, including 43, who were contacts of the positive persons, 19 from the OPD, 12 undertrials, seven SARI, six cops, three pregnant women, one domestic traveller, two healthcare workers and tracing of 20 persons was under process.

Seven new micro-containment zones declared today at New Kidwai Nagar, Modi Enclave Rajguru Nagar, New Amar Nagar, Daulat Colony, Maya Nagar, Tagore Nagar and Cotton Woods Flats, Jhammat.

In all, 77,409 samples were collected, out of which report of 75,162 was received and 68,550 samples were negative. The report of 2,247 was pending. The total number of Covid patients related to Ludhiana is 5,948. Today, 593 persons were sent to home quarantine.

Meanwhile, Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) today added 50 more beds to its existing Covid care centre on its premises. Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma said, “Earlier, the Covid care centre at the CMCH comprised 81 beds (21 level-3 and 60 level-2). Now, it capacity has been enhanced by 50 beds. The total capacity of the CMCH Covid care centre is 131 beds.”
