Dharamsala, April 20

The Kangra district administration has decided to shift anganwari centres from private buildings to government buildings. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Education Department.

There are about 4,200 anganwari centres in rural areas of which about 2,000 are operating in private buildings. District officials say that the department can save over Rs 2 crore per annum if the anganwari centres are shifted.

The centres function as kindergarten facilities for children in rural areas. The children of poor families in the rural areas study there and are provided food in these centres. Anganwari workers are local women, who are hired on a fixed amount of about Rs 3,000 per month. These workers have been demanding an increase in their monthly honorarium.

Kangra district officials have proposed that most centres should be shifted to the premises of the primary schools. This will help club together the centres and the schools and benefit children, the officials have said.

Deputy Commissioner Nipun Jindal said that officials had been asked to look for government buildings or schools where these centres could be shifted.—TNS
