Jalandhar, June 24

As many as 400 policemen from the Jalandhar Commissionerate of police on Friday attempted to conduct a major swoop in the drug/illicit liquor hub Qazi Mandi, but surprisingly achieved nothing.

Conducting the raid just two days ahead of the International Day Against Drug Abuse falling on Sunday, the city police had plans to show major seizures and create an impact but it perhaps all just fizzled out. A huge number of cops from five police stations of the city were involved in the raid.

Our idea of conducting the raid was not just making the arrests and recoveries. We also wanted to create some deterrence and sound off the criminals to shun away the bad practices. We will continue to hold more such raids in future. — Gursharan Singh Sandhu, Commissioner of Police

While 200 of them were a part of the raiding teams, the other 200 were a part of the naka teams in the area, which were to cordon off this area close to Jalandhar City railway station. The 400-strong team also included 100 women from the force.

But perhaps the information got leaked hours before the raid and the police teams had nothing to show as recovery. Other than 12 teams standing guard at the naka points, as many as 17 raiding parties were formed, which searched every nook and corner of the area, but the notorious peddlers and suppliers, who clearly have their cells in the police, had perhaps fled with their booty.

The raiding teams included many senior officials, including DCPs Jagmohan Singh and Jaskiranjit S Teja and ADCPs Suhail Mir, Harpal Singh, Gurbaz Singh and Harpreet Singh Beniwal. The officials told the media that they had rounded up five persons on the basis of suspicion and further details would be shared tomorrow.

Commissioner of Police Gursharan S Sandhu said: “Our idea of conducting the raid was not just making the arrests and recoveries. We also wanted to create some deterrence and sound off the criminals to shun away the bad practices. We will continue to hold more such raids in future,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Commissionerate of police have also planned to organise a cycle rally on Sunday to spread the message against drug abuse.
