Jalandhar, December 10

Women from various organisations and groups, led by the Istri Jagriti Manch, today staged a protest outside the Mehatpur police station against the police inaction in dowry cases, victimisation and torture of women by in-laws. The activists said the police had not lodged any case in this regard for the past one year.

Women alleged in the case of Sukhwinder Kaur, who had allegedly been beaten up and ousted from her in-laws’ home, along with her newborn daughter, rather acting on her MLR, the police instead lodged a false case against her under Sections 107, 151. They said after over one-and-half-years no action had been initiated by the police.

Another woman Harpreet has lodged a complaint for the past one-and-a-half year against alleged dowry victimisation by her in-laws, but no FIR had been registered in this regard. Other cases, included those of Kirandeep (victimisation by in-laws on dowry demand), Rimpi, Teena, Harvinder, Hardeep, Harpreet, among others. SHO Kewal Singh assured the protesting women that FIRs would be lodged in this regard in the coming 15.
