The district police in a joint operation with the Counter-Intelligence Wing, Jalandhar, arrested gangster Kulwant Singh, alias Gopa Nawanshehria, along with his two associates Anmol Dutta and Rahul. An illegal weapon and narcotic drugs have also been recovered from them.

Hoshiarpur SSP J Elanchezhian said teams of the Counter-Intelligence Wing were following Kulwant, a resident of SBS Nagar and Ravi Balachauria and Ghanti Mahilpuria for the past quite some time. The trio was suspected to be involved in heinous crimes in the Doaba area such as a bank dacoity in Kot Fatuhi, Hoshiarpur district, on July 30 and the Rs 21-lakh loot incident of Jalandhar in which a wine contractor was targeted on September 24.

Today, sleuths of the Counter Intelligence Wing got a tip-off that Kulwant was going towards Hoshiarpur on a black colour motorcycle along with his two accomplices.

The SSP said a joint team of the wing and the Sadar police station, Hoshiarpur, was formed to arrest them. The team immediately laid a checkpoint at the T-point of Boothgarh on the Chandigarh-Hoshiarpur road. Seeing the police, the trio tried to escape but they were nabbed by the police. The arrested accused were identified as Kulwant, Anmol Dutta, alias Prince, a resident of Bajwara village in Hoshiarpur, and Rahul, a resident of Shergarh.

During the search, an illegal pistol with live cartridge and 49 gm of narcotic powder were recovered from their possession.

An FIR under Sections 22/61/85 of the NDPS Act and 25/54/59 of the Arms Act has been registered against the gangsters for carrying illegal arms and narcotic drugs.

“During preliminary investigation, it came out that Kulwant has already facing around six cases of robbery, attempt to murder and other illegal activities and he was also absent from his court hearings in these cases,” the SSP said.

The police will present them before the Magistrate to seek their police remand to carry out further investigations.
