Ludhiana, March 1

Jatin Kumar and Gini, both trainees of Coaching Centre, Ludhiana, brought glory to the city by securing silver medals in judo event in the Khelo India University Games, which concluded at Guwahati in Assam on Thursday in which participants from as many as 115 universities from across the country vied for top honours in various sports disciplines.

Jatin and Gini are trainees of senior judo coach with the Punjab Sports Department Parveen Thakur at the centre run by the department here at the multipurpose indoor hall, opposite Guru Nanak Stadium. Jatin, a Bachelor of Physical Education student at Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, participated in the under-66 kg weight category and secured a silver medal.

Gini, a student of BA first year at the Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, too proved her mettle as she won a silver in the U-78 kg weight group.

Earlier, Jatin had bagged a silver in the All India Inter-University Judo Championship, held at Amritsar last month. He also clinched a bronze medal in the Khelo India University Games in Lucknow last year.

Besides, Jatin finished among the top seven judokas in the U-60kg weight category during the Junior Asian Judo Championship held in 2016 in Kerala. For his outstanding achievements, Jatin was honoured by the Punjab Government at the state-level Republic Day function this year.

Gini had annexed a bronze medal in the U-78 kg weight category of the All India Inter-University Judo Competition at Amritsar. She also participated in the 2022 Khelo India University Games held at Bengaluru. Gini is a gold medallist in the U-63 kg weight group at the National School Games, which were held in Delhi in 2019.

Coach Parveen Thakur appreciated the duo on finishing at the podium at Guwahati. “Jatin and Gini have bright prospects to excel at international-level competitions in the near future,” Thakur exuded confidence.

District sports officers Rupinder Singh Brar applauded the judokas and their coach on their outstanding achievements.
