The Sudhar police have initiated a probe into a fake Army recruitment scam in which a swindler, posing as a senior Army official, duped several young men of the region on the pretext of getting them recruited in the Army.
According to sources, around 100 youths of the Malwa region shelled out nearly Rs 50 lakh for getting themselves recruited. Interestingly, no advertisement for the recruitment was released.
One of the victims Chanan Singh, a resident of Phallewal village, Ludhiana, came in contact with the swindler who introduced himself as Lieutenant Colonel Sandeep Gill. Impressed by his disposition, Chanan persuaded other youths of the village to reach Guru Nanak Stadium Ludhiana for initial screening and then to Jalandhar for appearing in written examination for final selection.
“We were given kits containing trousers and t-shirts and asked to get ready for reporting at our respective units soon,” said victims, including Charanpal Singh, Harpal Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Davinder Pal Singh, Sunil Kumar, Paramjit Singh, Navjit Singh and Inderjit Singh.
The suspected fraudster allegedly invited them to Halwara Air Force Station saying from there they’ll be transported to their respective units.
However, they were shocked when authorities at the Air Force station sought intervention of the Sudhar police into the matter for ascertaining sequence of events.
Sudhar SHO Ajaib Singh said a probe into the matter had been initiated.
