Ludhiana, July 8

The first monsoon shower in this part of the region brought much relief from the scorching heat and sultry weather.

Residents heaved a sigh of relief as the weather changed for pleasant.

Assistant agro-meteorologist at Punjab Agricultural University, Dr KK Gill, said, “Yes, these are the monsoon showers. On July 8 and 9, light rains are expected all over. Till July 15, there will be low rainfall but after that, monsoon revival can be seen in the third and fourth week of July. Today, 13.8-mm rainfall was recorded. The temperature will come down from 1-2 degrees.”

As usual, the rain brought misery too in low-lying areas where residents had to face the problem of waterlogging.

Satkar Singh, a resident from Janta Nagar, said every year, they faced the problem of waterlogging. “It is first rain of the season and again we had to face difficulty as water was accumulated in streets. We have been complaining and pleading to do the needful but till date, there has been no respite,” rued Singh.

Waterlogging was witnessed in Giaspura, Industrial Area, Focal Point and Dhandari Kalan. Residents, especially those driving two-wheelers, had to face a lot of problems as the potholes on roads were filled with water.

Residents rued that the MC was not at all prepared to tackle the problem. They complained that sewerage pipes were choked, the roads were in bad condition and the drainage system was not cleared.

Youngsters have welcomed the first shower and expect that in the next few days, more such rains would be witnessed and temperature would come down.
