Summers are here in full swing and the Health Department has step up efforts against the spread of vector- borne diseases. Last year, Ludhiana was worst affected by dengue. Keeping this in mind, the Health Department has started early preparedness for preventing the spread of dengue.

The checking for dengue larvae has already stared been by the department. The department has 15 mosquitobreeding checkers, who are on round the duty these days.

“Department has already started preparing for dengue in advance. We have appointed teams and they are checking the breeding of mosquitoes. Although no larvae of dengue mosquitoes have been found till now, but still we are eyeing every possible place,” said Civil Surgeon, Dr SP Singh.

“Besides, the Aphersis machine at the Civil Hospital, that was lying defunct will be repaired within this week, Dr Singh added. “We have received the sanction for the funds and the company has been contacted for its repair. Within a week, the machine will be repaired,” said Dr Singh.

The machine was lying defunct from the past four years. Patients were not able to take benefit of this machine, which was bought for Rs42 lakh and were forced to pay double price at private hospitals for blood components.

The machine receives blood removed from the body of a donor and then separates it into its various components like plasma, platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells.

Appealing to the people, the Civil Surgeon said, “People should keep their surroundings clean and not let water stagnante around their houses. They are advised not to keep any old tyres, trays, tumblers and container in the open to prevent filling of water.”
