Local Govt Department forms group of experts

Acquisition of land for direct way to martyr’s ancestral house

Ludhiana, October 21

The Department of Local Government, Punjab, has formed a group of experts regarding the acquisition of a piece of land for making a direct way from Chaura Bazaar to the ancestral house of Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar at Mohalla Naughara in Ludhiana.

The expert group would evaluate the Social Impact Assessment report prepared by the Department of Economics and Sociology, PAU, Ludhiana, for acquiring 40 sq yards of land. Prof Rajesh Gill has been appointed as the chairperson of the expert group.

Members of the All India Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Memorial Trust have been demanding from the state government and the authorities concerned to make a direct way from Chaura Bazaar to the ancestral house of the martyr for a long time.

A member of the Trust, Tribhuvan Thapar said the process was being delayed to make a direct way to the martyr’s ancestral house.

He said: “At present, visitors face a lot of problems in finding the birthplace of the martyr. Even no sign boards have been installed. If a direct way is made, people would easily visit the birthplace of the martyr from the bazaar.”

People are unable to visit inside the ancestral house of the martyr as it generally remains closed these days. Even no steps are being taken by the authorities to ensure cleanliness there and surrounding areas despite repeated complaints made by Trust members.

Cleanliness drive

Under the “Clean India Campaign”, officials, youth club members, and volunteers of the Nehru Yuva Kendra carried out a cleanliness drive around the ancestral house of Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar on Thursday. District Youth Officer Rashmeet Kaur said more cleanliness drives would be carried out at iconic places in the city. — TNS
