The administration claimed to have roped in social and educational organisations for getting the Safe School Vahan Scheme (SSVS) implemented in letter and spirit to ensure safe transportation of schoolchildren.

A subdivision level seminar on the subject was held jointly by the administration and local unit of Rotary Club Ahmedgarh at MGMN Senior Secondary School here today.

Ajay Jain presided over the event and SDM Ahmedgarh Harbans Singh was the chief guest.

Purpose of the seminar was to educate transport staff of various schools about the safety of children on roads.

The SDM highlighted salient elements of the Safe School Vahan Scheme, a policy which is directed and issued to all educational institutes by the Punjab Government on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

On the guidelines of DC Malerkotla Amrit Kaur Gill, the SDM said safe bus-body fabrication was the primary norm, which all vehicle owners had to follow with proper maintenance of the vehicle.

Singh said, “Under the scheme each school is required to constitute a committee headed by principal. The committee consisting of at least one police official not below the rank of ASI, motor vehicle inspector, a delegate of DEO and representative of PTA, is supposed to convene a monthly meeting to review implementation of the policy.”

Earlier, speakers including Executive Magistrate Pawandeep Singh, SHO (City) Winner Preet Singh, subdivision traffic incharge Kulwant Singh, assistant governor Rotary Club Dr Ravinder Sharma, district coordinator Education Department Khalil Mohammad and Principal Viney Goyal regretted that majority of accidents occur due to dearth of skilled and expert drivers and to avoid this, the drivers should be trained and educated about road safety and traffic rules.

DSP Ahmedgarh Sandeep Vadhera said beat officers and traffic staff had been advised to ensure that drivers of all vehicles carrying students implement safety norms. — OC
