Tributes paid to war hero Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon

A wreath-laying ceremony was organised to pay tributes to Param Vir Chakra recipient Flying Officer Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon on the 50th anniversary of the 1971 Indo-Pak war victory at the District Administrative Complex here today. Martyr Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon, a native of Issewal village in Dakha, is a war hero. He sacrificed his life during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

On the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma, Vir Chakra Col (retd) Harbaksh Singh Kahlon, Wg Cdr MS Randhawa, Col SS Bhullar, Capt Nachattar Singh, Subedar Bhupinder Singh, besides several others paid tributes to Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon by laying wreaths while the Punjab Police personnel presented the Guard of Honour to the martyr.

Martyr Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon, born on July 17, 1943, was commissioned in Indian Air Force in 1967. During the 1971 Indo-Pak war, Srinagar air field was attacked by a wave of six Pakistani aircraft on December 14, 1971. Flag Officer Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon despite being under attack displayed exceptional flying skills and took off to counter the enemy attack. The officer exhibited extreme courage, valour and determination par excellence to thwart the Pakistani attack and destroyed two enemy aircraft forcing the enemy to return. Being heavily outnumbered, the officer eventually made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation while fighting the enemy.

He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously for exemplary courage and determination in defeating the enemy during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
