Trivandrum airport gold smuggling case: RAW, NIA join probe

The NIA and RAW launched their respective probe after one of the accused, a beautician with a business in Dubai, was allegedly found to links with a Pakistani involved in gold smuggling.

Thiruvananthapuram, June 6

The CBI on Thursday filed a report in a special CBI court on a gold smuggling episode in which a Customs Officer has been arrested among others. The case has now witnessed a new twist with the RAW and NIA beginning a probe as well.

The NIA and RAW launched their respective probe after one of the accused, a beautician with a business in Dubai, was allegedly found to links with a Pakistani involved in gold smuggling.

Even though it was the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) who effected the arrest of the carriers, the case is now being investigated by the CBI .

For the past six months, the DRI had been keeping a close tab on the airport.

The CBI in its report has alleged that the key conspirator was Customs Superintendent V. Radhakrishnan, who has now been arrested. During April, there was an increase in flow of gold to the country. The DRI last month arrested a beautician along with a carrier who came with 25 kilograms of gold at the airport here.

Others arrested include an advocate couple, two employees working with a jewellery shop here, and one Prakash Thampi, an associate of musician Balabhaskar. Balabhaskar’s death in a road accident is also now being probed into by the Crime Branch police.

The probe agencies were said to be closing in on two others who were based in Dubai. The agencies have also opposed the bail applications of those arrested, given the alleged Pakistani links being established. —IANS
