Meera Yadav, second wife of Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Parishad Chairperson Ramesh Yadav, was arrested today and remanded in 14-day judicial custody after she confessed to having murdered her 22-year-old son Abhijeet Yadav, alias Vicky, on Sunday.

After misleading the police for a day, Meera finally broke down and admitted that she had killed her younger son as she was tired of his drunkenness. She said he tried to attack her in that state on Saturday night. In the ensuing tussle, she strangulated him with her dupatta.

However, when she was being taken to the court, she said she had been wrongly implicated in the case and that her son had commit suicide.

Reports had gone viral on social media about the mysterious death of Ramesh Yadav’s son who is also the Samajwadi Party MLC from Etah. Neighbours found it difficult to believe that a 22-year-old could die of heart attack, as was being claimed by the family.

Undue haste by the family to cremate the body even before the arrival of Ramesh Yadav from Etah raised suspicion. The body was seized and sent for a post-mortem examination that revealed the 22-year-old had died of “asphyxia caused by strangulation”. Injury marks were also found on his head.

Deceased’s elder brother lodged a case of murder against unidentified persons at the Hazratganj police station. The body was cremated late on Sunday.

Meera Yadav tried to prevent the police from conducting a search in the apartment. She also tried to hide the bedcover that had blood stains on it. After repeatedly changing her statement, she finally admitted that she had strangulated her son. Meera Yadav was an officer in the state’s Tourism Department and had resigned recently.
