Ludhiana, February 22

The Municipal Corporation has started night sweeping at Ghumar Mandi in ward 76. According to information, a group of safai karamcharis have been deployed for night sweeping in the area.

The MC Joint Commissioner, Kulpreet Singh, and ward councillor Gurpreet Gogi today conducted a meeting with shopkeepers of Ghumar Mandi in this regard. Gogi said the shopkeepers had been made aware of night sweeping work by the MC.

“The shopkeepers have been asked not to litter roads after cleaning their shops in the morning. They have been asked to install bins at their shops and throw litter into it. If any shopkeeper is found littering the road, a challan will be issued to him,” he said.

Gogi said night sweeping would be carried out by the sweepers under supervision of a sanitary inspector around 11 pm when the market remained closed. If the initiative remains successful, it would be launched in the entire ward, he added.

“During daytime, cleaning could not be done in a proper manner due to traffic movement and parking of vehicles. The MC has come up with a good idea to start night sweeping in the area,” said Gogi.

Joint Commissioner Kulpreet Singh said they had started night sweeping on a trial basis at Ghumar Mandi and they were getting good response. He said they had advised the shopkeepers to clean their shops before closing at night. They have been advised to install green and blue bins for segregation of waste. The sweeping work which was done in five hours during daytime at Ghumar Mandi is now being done in three hours at night, he said.

He said they would plan to start night sweeping at other commercial places.
