Patiala, January 28
Three unidentified men attacked a man in his car and stabbed him to death during the wee hours of Sunday, the police said. The police have recovered the victim’s vehicle, in which the suspects tried to flee, but which they had to abandon after an accident.
The police said that the victim, Sameer Kataria (37), was on his way home with his friend Kishan when three motorcycle-borne men attacked them when he stopped the vehicle on Passy Road. The cops added that the victim and his friend were in an inebriated state when they were attacked.
An FIR has been registered on the basis of the statement given by Sameer’s brother. The police said, “The men attacked Sameer with sharp-edged weapons and also fired gunshots even as Kishan escaped. The suspects left Sameer in a pool of blood and tried to flee with the vehicle. However, they met with an accident some 150 metres away and left the vehicle there.”
Patiala SP (city) Mohammed Sarfaraz Alam said that four motorcycle-borne men had accosted Sameer and Kishan. “Three of them attacked the victim. The co-passenger in the vehicle, who is a friend of the victim, fled and informed Sameer’s family,” he said.
Civil Lines SHO HS Dhillon said, “It doesn’t look like the suspects wanted to escape with the vehicle. We are probing the case, considering all possible reasons behind the attack.”
The postmortem showed the victim was stabbed with a knife around his neck, leading to excessive bleeding and causing death. Some empty bullet shells were recovered, but it’s unlikely the death was caused by a gunshot, the police said.
