Bathinda, July 13

Dengue has started spreading its tentacles in the region with over 15 cases being reported from Bathinda and Mansa recently. As per records of the Health Department, nine cases of dengue have been reported from Bathinda and six from Mansa districts this season so far. A woman patient is suspected to have died of the disease. Besides, there are around 20 suspected patients of dengue.

Many dengue patients are undergoing treatment at private hospitals in the city. Such patients do not figure in the Health Department records.

The department has formed surveillance teams, which have been carrying out field activities to tackle the dengue menace, which is at its nascent stage now. The teams have been conducting door-to-door activities to sensitise city residents to preventive measures. Separate inspection teams are visiting residential, commercial and other public areas in the city to detect dengue larvae and destroy them.

Jaswinder Singh, a health inspector at the Civil Surgeon’s office in Bathinda, said, “Our teams have detected and destroyed over 250 larvae in the city so far and inspections are on. A majority of these larvae were found in urban areas of the district.”

“Fogging is being undertaken at regular intervals. Apart from the efforts being put in by the Health Department, residents need to do their bit and take preventive measures such as not to allow water stagnate in their houses in order to prevent breeding of dengue larvae,” he said.
