In a daring theft, robbers dug holes in the walls of two shops through Barnala police station on Monday night and stole items from three shops.

Police have parked confiscated vehicles in the vacant space at the backside of the station and robbers used the same area to dig holes in shops. SSP Barnala has ordered a departmental inquiry.

There are CCTVs also in the police station but they do not cover the entire area.

Interestingly, it happened when the whole state has been on high alert and additional force has been deployed due to ongoing tension after the murder of Dera Sacha Sauda follower Mohinder Pal Bittu in Nabha Jail.

“I got to know about theft in the morning when I opened my shop. Thieves made a hole in the backside of my shop after entering through police station. Around Rs 3000 cash and other items are missing. It has sent shock waves in the city shopkeepers as when shops near to police station are not safe, what would happen with others?” said Krishan Kumar.

Thieves came prepared with sharp weapons and spent around more than two hours but cops posted in police station failed to even notice any illegal activity in their premises till the morning.

Barnala police station is located in the market committee office and is in the heart of the city.

At the front side, there is a building of police station while on backside cops have been storing the confiscated vehicles and other case properties.

Though cops posted in police station are tight lipped, but sources informed that all cops were present in police station when the crime occurred.
