Jagmale Singh, a Dalit youth from Sangur’s Changaliwala village, who was allegedly thrashed by fellow residents following an altercation and “forced to drink urine”, is in critical condition at the PGI here, his legs amputated, said a doctor. Jagmale’s nephew Gurdeep said he had also suffered kidney failure.

Jagmale had an altercation with Rinku, his father Amarjit Singh and Lucky on October 21, but the matter was resolved on the intervention of some villagers. On November 7, the accused took Jagmale to Rinku’s house, thrashed him and forced him to “drink urine.” Taking suo motu notice, the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission today sought a report from the Sangrur SSP on the incident.

As per an FIR registered under Sections 365, 342, 308, 323 and 34 of the IPC and the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, the accused tied up Jagmale with pieces of cloth and thrashed him mercilessly. When Jagmale pleaded for water, he was forced to drink urine.

Tejinder Kaur, Chairperson of the commission, told The Tribune, “I have sought a detailed report from the SSP within a week”. SSP Sandeep Garg said they had arrested the accused and a probe was on.
