‘Virat Kohli apologised to me for spitting incident during 2015 India-South Africa Test series’, reveals Dean Elgar

Former South Africa captain Dean Elgar recently revealed a shocking incident from the Proteas tour of India in 2015, where he claimed that Virat Kohli, then newly appointed India captain, spat at him during the first Test at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.

Elgar made the revelation on the ‘Banter, with The Boys’ podcast for Betway South Africa’s YouTube channel.

Elgar described the playing conditions during the series as challenging, particularly criticising the wickets. Recalling the incident, he said, “Those wickets were jokes. Like playing on that surface there. And I came into bat and I was actually like holding my own against Ashwin and what’s his name Jeja, Jeja, Jeja (Ravindra Jadeja) (smiles) and Kohli, he like spat at me.”

Elgar added, “I said to him if you do that, I’ll f*g * you with this bat.”

When asked if Kohli understood the local profanity, Elgar said, “Yes, he did because de Villiers was his teammate at RCB, so he understood. And I said if you do that, I’ll knock you out. And then Kohli said ‘Hey F** you, F** you but barking up the wrong tree yeah. Anyway, he acknowledged the need to be cautious in India.”

However, the tension between the two players eased over the years.

Elgar disclosed that Kohli apologised for his behaviour, “Two-three years later, Kohli pulled me aside and said ‘can we go and have a drink after the series, I want to apologise for my actions.’ So we drank till 3 in the morning. This is when he used to drink alcohol,” Elgar said.
