Chandigarh, November 19

Another disappointing show by the Chandigarh batters saw the team suffer an 87-run defeat against hosts Andhra Pradesh in the ongoing Women’s Under-23 T20 Cricket Trophy at Guntur today.

After conceding 145/9, Punjab were bowled out for a paltry 62. It was the second day in a row that the Chandigarh batters failed to put up a fight. Chandigarh had been dismissed for 44, while chasing a target of 123 against Chhattisgarh yesterday.

After winning the toss, the hosts opted to bat first, but had a miserable start. Chandigarh medium-pacer Kashvee Gautam got the breakthrough by dismissing opener Anusha Nerugatti (4) and Avula Sireesha (4) in her first two overs. Chandigarh captain Amanjot Kaur struck another blow when she dismissed Padmaja Ellutla for a duck, reducing Andhra Pradesh to 16/3 within the first five overs. At the other end, opener Jhansi Challa kept scoring at a swift pace. She lost another partner, Vurukati Latha (4), after a mix-up in the middle. Vurukati was run out by Kumari Shibi, leaving the hosts at 54/4 in the 10th over.

The tide changed, however, when Anjali Kesavarajugari walked in. She stitched a 95-run sixth-wicket partnership with Jhansi to take the total to 149. Jhansi hit 12 fours in her 70 off 57 balls, while Anjali smashed 55 off 32 balls, which included nine fours.

Kashvee returned with figures of 2/33, while Amanjot finished with 1/20 from her four overs.

Chandigarh’s chase never got off the ground as they kept losing wickets cheaply at regular intervals. Amanjot, though, was the highest scorer with 26 runs, she could not force the pace, hitting just one four in her 47-ball innings. Nandini Sharma contributed 14 runs. Anjali Kesavrajugari (3/12), Jhansi Challa (2/7) and Sindhuja G (2/9) brought their top game for the hosts.

Punjab men lose by 148 runs to Karnataka

Punjab suffered a humiliating 148-run loss to Karnataka in the men’s Under-23 One-day Trophy. Chasing Karnataka’s 256/6, Punjab were bowled out for 108 in 36.1 overs.
