A day of demonstrations in city

It was a day of protest in the city on Tuesday. While resident doctors organised a protest alleging inaction in connection with an eve-teasing case, members of the Revolutionary Marxist Party of India staged a demonstration against the Central Government as they said its Budget had nothing concrete for the public. In another development, the farmers, who had been protesting for the past two days over “low” milk procurement rate, lifted their dharna after getting an assurance from the district administration that their demands would be looked into.

At the Government Medical College and Hospital, junior as well as senior resident doctors held a massive protest, alleging inaction over an “eve-teasing” incident. According to information, two female doctors have been teased by security guards.

Talking to mediapersons, Dr JP Singh, president, RDAP, said the incident occurred on Monday night. Two resident doctors were subjected to eve-teasing while they were returning to their quarters after duty hours. “When we lodged our complaint, the medical superintendent shrugged off the responsibility and tried to hush it up. We demand action against the culprits as well as resignation of the medical superintendent (MS),” he said.

The protesting residents burnt an effigy of the MS and demanded installation of CCTV cameras at several vulnerable spots inside the campus. “We also demand round-the-clock security for resident doctors and action in another incident as well wherein a junior resident was thrashed on duty. We will continue with our strike until our demands are met,” he added.

Meanwhile, the workers of the Revolutionary Marxist Party of India said that the Union Budget had nothing much to offer to the common man. They demanded a hike in the wages for labourers and also an increase in the financial assistance being offered under the Shagun scheme. They also accused the government of resorting to divisive politics.
