Amritsar, March 7
The Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, a nodal agency of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has sanctioned an amount of Rs 12.10 lakh to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, for setting up of eco-clubs in colleges affiliated to GNDU. The objective is for these eco-clubs to conduct Mission LiFE (Mission Lifestyle for Environment) activities such as workshops, campaigns, exhibitions and competitions under the Environment Education Programme-2023-24.
Prof Saroj Arora, Dean, College Development Council of the university, said that the programme seeks to create awareness about eco-system restoration, solid waste management through waste segregation (biodegradable and non-biodegradable), celebration of important environmental days, plantation drives, cleanliness and sanitation drives, awareness on reducing the use of single-use plastics (SUPs) among the youth and faculty to participate and take up meaningful environmental activities to promote sound environmental behaviour.
Prof Arora said that the students will be motivated to take up environmental awareness and ecological restoration activities in their college campuses which will further empower the students to explore environmental concepts and actions beyond the confines of a syllabus or curriculum. Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh Sandhu expressed happiness that the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology has selected the university to sensitise the students in colleges about environment protection.
Last year, Guru Nanak Dev University received the prestigious Shaheed Bhagat Singh Punjab State Annual Environment Award, 2023, in recognition of its significant contribution toward improving and protecting environment in the state. The university has successfully implemented the ‘zero-waste green campus’ initiative in recent years.
