Amritsar, January 20

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Himanshu Agarwal on Monday directed the Municipal Corporation and the police to act against private luxury buses parked on the flyover outside the railway station in the Hall Gate area.

He passed instructions during a meeting on road safety with Transport Department, Public Works Department and civic body officials at the Zila Parishad office here on Monday. At the meeting, traffic police officers were also present.

He said the buses, which had been parked illegally, had become a nuisance for commuters as these had encroached upon the road outside the railway station, leaving almost no space for traffic.

The buses belonging to different private transporters have been parked to attract the passengers. These buses also cause losses to the state exchequer.

The ADC asked the police to check the authenticity of logos of media organisations and police department pasted on vehicles by illegitimate persons. He asked the authorities to repair traffic lights.

“In December 2019, the traffic police had issued 2,164 challans and a fine of Rs11.35 lakh was imposed on offenders. The rural police had issued 442 challans and a fine of Rs84,000 was imposed. The maximum number of challans was issued for driving two-wheelers without helmet, wrong parking, red light jump and using mobile phones while driving,” said the ADC.

Angrej Singh, Assistant Secretary, Regional Transport Authority, said a drive had been launched to install reflectors on the rear of tractors, trolleys, rickshaws and horse carts to prevent road mishaps.
