350 cadets attend session on alternatives to plastic

WWF-India (Punjab) has completed a week of youth outreach programme to connect them with the environment and serve nature.

In an interaction on Tuesday with over 350 cadets of the NCC drawn from across the country, essential facets of sustainable living were introduced to them. Stalls showcasing plastic substitutes, such as attractive cloth bags, plates and glasses made out of sugarcane waste, safe glass bottles and toxin free food items were showcased at the Khalsa College Public School.

Various events in collaboration with Dilbir Foundation were held at the millennium school and GNDU. Products showcased at the university were checked by the mobile squad of FSSAI and all were found to be pure and devoid of any adulterants. The camp was organised by Col Ashwini Kumar, Commanding Officer, 11 Punjab Batallion, NCC Punjab.

Principal AS Gill, KCPS, spoke about the need for sensible thought and action by educational institutions and was especially pleased with the introduction of recycled newspaper pencils instead of wood for students. Representatives of Ahmedabad University also participated in the deliberations to study the impact of such interactions in this heritage city.

The event was presided over by Gunbir Singh, president, Dilbir Foundation, and chairman, WWF-India (Punjab). He urged the cadets to listen to the inner voice of their conscience. Whenever a person litters on road, leaves a tap running, defaces a monument or cuts a tree, this conscience helps him to realise his wrongdoing.
