In clear violation of the code of conduct, Congress candidate from the Amritsar (Central) Assembly constituency OP Soni held a political rally on road in the Rani Ka Bagh area near his house.

The Congress has nominated Soni as its candidate from the Amritsar Central assembly constituency while the rally was held in the area of Amritsar North.

Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) Sourav Kumar Arora said the rally amounted to violation of the code of conduct. After the report of the violation dropped in, he said, he verified it from the Returning officer (RO) of the area and learnt that no prior permission was taken for holding the rally.

He added that the RO concerned would release a notice to the Congress candidate as per the norms.

Meanwhile, the district election machinery found and dealt with 5,400 violations of the code of conduct till yesterday. Dr Basant Garg, District Election Officer-cum- Deputy Commissioner, said these violations included pasting posters, banners, hoardings and wall papers. As many as 3,502 posters were found pasted over structures of non-government buildings and 1,907 on government buildings. He said all propaganda material were removed well before the 72-hour deadline after the announcement of election.
