In order to curb carbon emission into the environment, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has planned to provide bicycles to its students in the next session, commencing in July.

These cycles shall be parked at stands on the campus. Students can take these from the cycle stands for a “nominal” fee. The facility of monthly pass shall also be available.

Providing cycles to students is a part of university to make itself a vehicle-free zone. For this, two separate parking lots are being constructed. The staff and students shall park their vehicles, collect their cycles to reach their respective destination. e-rickshaws shall also be made available on the campus.

The bicycle facility will also be available for day scholars and hostellers alike.

Registrar Karanjeet Singh Kahlon said, “It will be available for all. A student will have to pay Rs 5 for using a bicycle for 30 minutes. A student using cycles for multiple times a day has to shell out Rs 10. Besides, a monthly pass will available for Rs 199. Though the facility is primarily for students, even teaching and non-teaching staff can also make use of it.”

GNDU Vice-Chancellor Jaspal Singh Sandhu said, “The facility will also be available for hostellers. Security will be beefed up to avoid any unpleasantry. The facility will be available for students next month once speed bumps bars are installed at certain spots.”

The university also plans to expand its solar plant usage to other departments.
