Khalsa varsity gets VC, its fate hangs in balance

AMRITSAR: Though uncertainty prevails following the scrapping of the Act under which Khalsa University (KU) was set up, former Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University (SGGSWU), Fatehgrah Sahib, Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia, today took charge as the VC of the Khalsa University.

Though uncertainty prevails following the scrapping of the Act under which Khalsa University (KU) was set up, former Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University (SGGSWU), Fatehgrah Sahib, Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia, today took charge as the VC of the Khalsa University.

KU Pro-Chancellor Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina welcomed him. He said, “We have not received any communication from the government to scrap the Khalsa University. Classes are being conducted regularly.”

In his maiden meeting with the university staff and students, Dr Walia assured them that the uncertainty regarding the functioning of the university would end soon. He said the recent developments had been detrimental to the new university which had been established as per the norms of the state government and the UGC, but the university would work to impart best of the professional and research education in the area. “My focus will be on setting up of the administration, research in diverse fields and chalking out job-oriented courses to produce best of the human resource in the country,” he said.

Dr Walia, who is an expert on language and religious issues, is PhD in English. Issues on women rights, business studies, environment management and development are key areas of his interests. He had earlier been the Director, Education, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), managing 45 colleges and 75 schools.

The state government had last year approved the setting up of Khalsa University, Amritsar. Governor VP Singh Badnore is the visitor of the university.
