Six inmates found taking intoxicating items to jail

AMRITSAR: Six jail inmates were found possessing narcotic substances in the high security Central Jail here on Sunday. Three of them had returned from Tarn Taran after appearing before a court for hearing while two of them had returned from parole.

Six jail inmates were found possessing narcotic substances in the high security Central Jail here on Sunday.

Three of them had returned from Tarn Taran after appearing before a court for hearing while two of them had returned from parole. They brought the contraband after concealing it in rectum.

Avtar Singh, Assistant Superintendent, Central Jail, stated to the police that Kuldeep Singh of Shahbazpur village in Tarn Taran, Pipple Singh of Kauharkan village in Tarn Taran and Salwinder Singh of Tarn Taran tried to sneak in 650 intoxicating tablets, 22 gm of opium and 8 gm of charas. Preliminary probe revealed that Kuldeep Singh assured the other two jail inmates that he would give them Rs 2,000 if they help him take the prohibited material to the jail complex.

When they returned after hearing, the jail staff got suspicious as they were seen limping. Later, during checking they found the contraband which they had concealed in their rectum.

A case under Sections 18, 20, 21, 22, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act and Section 42 of the Prisons Act has been registered against them.

Similarly, Raman, alias Jafar Safari, alias Rimpa, a resident of Ram Tirath Road, and Vijay Kumar of Himmatpura were found possessing 65-gm charas and 18-gm heroin. They had returned from parole and during checking 25-gm charas and 18-gm heroin was recovered from Raman and 40-gm charas from Vijay Kumar. A separate case has been registered.

In another seizure, 20-gm tobacco was confiscated from another jail inmate, identified as Gurbhej Singh of Krishna Nagar, Tarn Taran road. He was booked under Section 42 of the Prisons Act.

Jail Superintendent Arshdeep Singh Gill said such criminals did not desist from trying to take prohibited material to the jail. Jail staff remain alert and conduct surprise checks on regular basis to curb such incidents, he added.
