AMRITSAR: The two-day Syal festival concluded on Sunday at Majha House with informative and deep discussions on food, session on Amrita Pritam, on Assamese Sikhs, stories of Partition among others.

The two-day Syal festival concluded on Sunday at Majha House with informative and deep discussions on food, session on Amrita Pritam, on Assamese Sikhs, stories of Partition among others. The festival was dedicated to KS Dhillon, former DGP of Punjab and historian, father of Majha House founder Preeti Gill.

The session on Punjabi poetry titled Hamari Amrita highlighted the life of legendary writer Amrita Pritam. The panelists talked about her life and love. Besides, a small film on her was screened. The Punjabi poetry was anchored by Nirupama Dutt had Simrit Gagan, Ajeet Singh and Harjit Singh among others.

In another session on migrants, refugees, citizen –The Sikhs of Assam, a report on Assamese Sikhs by the Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES) and Majha House with support from Heinrich Boll Foundation, Delhi was released.

The panel discussion included Amandeep, Sanjoy Hazarika, founder and managing trustee of C-NES, Niyati Singh, a freelancer consultant, Simran Kaur, chairperson, Soch to Sach society. Talking about the need for such a research, Niyati, said, “It is an effort to create awareness of Assamese Sikhs. This is our first step. ”

Adding on the context of awareness among Sikhs and role of SGPC, Simran Kaur, said, “The SGPC needs a greater outreach to create awareness about Sikhs living in Assam. People are hardly aware of community residing there.”

The research also touched the issues of Sikhs residing in Shillong, their concerns, and life.
