Despite several awareness drives launched by the Municipal Corporation (MC) the practice of washing cars by using hosepipes in houses goes unabated. Showing no concern about depleting water table, educated and well-off residents have been washing their cars with tap water at their homes. As per experts, residents waste a lot of water, when they wash their vehicles at homes.

The Local Bodies Department has often put a ban on washing of cars during summer months. At present, there is a need to start an awareness drive to save water throughout the year.

Residents hire some workers, who wash their cars daily. Due to washing of vehicles water accumulates on roads. As per the rule, the health wing of the MC has a provision to issue challans to violators.

“Water is precious in every season. The MC should check wastage of water even in the winters. Moreover, two-wheelers skid on roads due to water accumulation. Besides, roads become breeding grounds of mosquitoes. The civic body should keep a vigil on the practice,” said Jatinder Pal Singh, a resident Presently, the MC does not issue a challan to anyone for wasting water.

Anurag Mahajan, chief engineer, operation and maintenance wing of the MC said, “Earlier, there were orders to ban washing of cars at homes but, I am not aware of its present status. We do not issue challan to anyone.”
