1,251 In The Field For 154 Assembly Seats

Chandigarh, January 28. 

Reports from various returning officers indicate that 1,251 persons have filed their nomination papers for 153 Assembly Constituencies.  Reports from the only remaining Simla Assembly constituency are still awaited.

For 22 parliamentary constituencies 173 candidates have filed their nomination papers. Of them, the five reserved seats there 33 nomination papers.

Out of the 154 Assembly constituencies 33 are reserved and 265 candidates are to contest in them.

In the last General Election 1957 for the same number of Assembly and Parliamentary Constituencies 1,287 and 135 nomination papers respectively were filed.

Of the contestants for Assembly seats there are thirteen women, nine of them are Congress nominee, one Akali, one Communist and two Independents.

There are two women among the Parliamentary candidates. But both of them are covering candidates and are, therefore, likely to withdraw their candidature on February 1.
