862 Candidates Left In Election Field

CHANDIGARH: A record number of 755 candidates have been left in the field to contest from 154 assembly constituencies in the current elections, according to the final picture as emerged after withdrawals yesterday.

A record number of 755 candidates have been left in the field to contest from 154 assembly constituencies in the current elections, according to the final picture as emerged after withdrawals yesterday.

In all 1,273 persons had filed their nomination papers seeking election to the Vidhan Sabha.  Of them 492 have withdrawn their candidature and the papers of 26 were rejected.

In the last — 1957— General Election 1, 287 persons had field their nomination papers.  But only 579 of them had actually contested others have withdrawn.

Out of the 173 candidates who filed their nomination papers seeking election to the Lok Sabha from 22 Parliamentary seats in the state there are now only 107 candidates.  Sixty two of them have withdrawn from the flight and the papers of four were rejected.

Only 79 candidates had contested from all the Parliamentary Constituencies in the last General Election.  Then 135 persons had filed their nomination papers.

As in the last General Election the Congress has set up candidates in each of the 154 Assembly and 22 Parliamentary seats.

The Communist Party which had contested 11 Parliamentary constituencies in the last General Election is now fighting only in four.

The Jan Sangh has increased its number of candidates for Parliamentary seats from 16 in the last to 17 in the current General Election.

The Akali Dal, which had merged itself with the Congress at the time of the last General Election and did not put up any candidate then, has set up in the current elections seven candidates in Parliamentary constituencies.

The Republican Party has also increased its number of candidates for Parliamentary seats from 4 in 1957 to 7 now.

So far as the Assembly constituencies are concerned compared to the last General Election the number of candidates put up by the Communist party has decreased from 67 to 47.

As against 62 Jan Sangh candidates who fought the last General Election there will now be 80.  The republicans have set up 25 candidates as against 26 last time.

The Akali Dal has 47 nominees in the current elections.

The Praja- Socialist Party which fought in 15 constituencies in the last General Election has set up this time only ten candidates.

The following are the details of the candidates contesting the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha seats, which could not be published yesterday.

The party affiliation is indicated in brackets against each candidate; where no party is mentioned the candidate is an Independent.
