(From Our Own Correspondent)

AMRITSAR, march. 24.

Master Tara Singh declared here tonight that the Shromani Akali Dal had never abandoned politics.

The Dal chief told a meeting outside the Golden Temple that the Dal reserved the right to include politics in its activities as and when it felt necessary.

The statement came after the conclusion of his 10-day prayer and non-stop recitation and hearing the Guru Granth Sahib in seclusion at his residence for what he declared “unity of the panth”.

Master Tara Singh added: 'We shall remove the misunderstanding that prevails in the public mind about this, but there is no need to change the Dal constitution again. The Dal had retained the relevant clauses of its constitutionfor religious, social and cultural work, but had merely directed its members to join hands with the Congress in the matter of politics". This he interpreted as meaning that the Akai Dal had full authority to participate in politics.

He further mentioned that the Akali Dal Working Committee meeting on March 26 will consider whole matter and without specifically saying so he indicated that Akali Dal would consider its relationship with the Congress.
