This resolution did not receive the support of Maulvi Abdul Ghani who thought it was against the principle of democracy and he, therefore, asked the mover to withdraw it.
Eventually, however, Maulvi Abdul Ghani withdrew his technical objection and the resolution being put to the House was carried.
Gyani Kartar Singh proposed the name of Mr. Kairon for leadership. It was seconded by Ch. Suraj Mal and supported by Ch. Sri Chand. As there was no other name Mr. Shriman Narayan Congress General Secretary, who was presiding announced the election of Mr. Kairon as leader of the party unanimously amidst cheers.
Mr. Harbans Lal Gupta, former President of the PEPSU Congress then moved a resolution authorising Mr. Kairon to nominate office-bearers and executive committee of the party. S. Gyan Singh Rarewala seconded it. Moulvi Abdul Ghani struck a discordant note, and said it would have been better if such a proposal had not been brought. He hoped the resolution would not be passed as it went against the principal of democracy.
