Bathinda, November 21

A resident of Mandi Kalan, who had been accusing a sub-inspector and another individual of harassing him by demanding Rs 6-7 lakh from him, committed suicide yesterday.

Deceased Bhupinder Singh consumed poison last night at Mandi Kalan village. The Balianwali police today initiated a probe after recovery of a suicide note, but no case has been registered yet.

Residents of Mandi Kalan have sought strict action against the policeman and the other accused.

Parhlad Singh, brother of the deceased, said his brother Bhupinder and neighbour Gurpal Singh were arrested by the CIA-2 wing on March 21 last year under the NDPS Act.

He claimed that his brother was innocent. The SSP had marked an inquiry to Maur DSP Davinder Singh who found his brother innocent and his name was also dropped from the case, he added.

Parhlad Singh alleged the accused also threatened to testify against his brother if he turned down their demand.

Bathinda SSP Naveen Singla said they had started investigation in the case and action would be taken if anyone was found guilty.

The SSP added that the police did their duty and Bhupinder Singh was not charge-sheeted.
