Malout, August 20

Irate over the flowing of sewage on the streets, residents of Bharat Nagar, Ward No 18, on Monday lodged a protest by taking off their shirts. The protesters demanded a permanent solution to the problem.

They claimed that the officials concerned were least bothered about the problem.

“The sewerage system functions properly in other neighbouring localities, but here we are forced live in a hell-like situation. We have met the officials concerned a number of times, but nobody seems to be bothered to find out a permanent solution to the problem of overflowing sewage,” said Om Parkash and Harjit Singh, local residents.

They threatened that if the officials of the Water Supply and Sewerage Board did not swing into action, they would launch a protest outside their office.

“We are living under filthy conditions as our area is being ignored. Manholes are overflowing. There are chances of an outbreak of water-borne diseases. If adequate steps are not taken, a majority of people will fall ill,” they claimed.

Notably, the state government has launched ‘Swachh Punjab’ and ‘Tandarust Punjab’ campaigns to carry out cleanliness works and hardly a day passes, when the officials concerned do not claim that they were doing a lot of works to maintain cleanliness.
