Presiding over the Independence Day function at Nehru Stadium, Faridkot, Harjit Singh, Divisional Commissioner, called upon the youth to take the pledge to abstain from drugs and be part of the state government’s fight against drugs in the state. He was addressing a gathering at the Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday.

Since unemployment is the root cause of the drug problem, the state government is working on a strategy to provide employment to the youth, the Divisional Commissioner said in his address. He also launched ‘Tu Mera Buddy’ programme to take the war against drugs to schools and colleges.

The project will involve principals, teachers, students and their parents to spread awareness about the ill-effects of drug abuse across the state.

The buddy project will be led by class teachers and supervised by the principals and district education officers, said Rajeev Prashar, Deputy Commissioner, Faridkot.

In a separate programme to celebrate Independence Day, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot hoisted the National Flag on the university campus even as it rained.

The students of Guru Gobind Singh Medical and Nursing College sang the National Anthem and the National Flag was given a salute. Students of B.Sc.

Hoisting the National Flag, Dr Raj Bahadur, vice-chancellor of the university, called upon the faculty members of the constituent colleges for teamwork so that betterment and development of the institution can be ensured. — TNS
