Pre-nursery students forced to attend classes in veranda

In the absence of adequate classrooms, students of Government Primary School, Mata Jivi Nagar, have been attending classes in the veranda. Against five classrooms for the primary wing and pre-nursery section, the school has only three rooms.

With a scarcity of rooms in the school, the authorities have accommodated students of a class in the store room as well. But despite that, all students cannot be adjusted in the classrooms. Students of the pre-primary section have been attending classes in the veranda of the school on a daily basis.

A total of 162 students are studying in the school and apart from inadequate classrooms, there is no playground. The school authorities said the building of the school was in a congested residential area and it was not possible to introduce or construct more rooms.

A teacher of the school requesting anonymity said while it was still manageable to conduct classes in the school veranda, but when the summer season would be at its peak in May and June, it would be really difficult for small kids of pre-nursery to attend classes here.

Paramjit Kaur, headmistress, Government Primary School, Mata Jivi Nagar, said, “We have brought the matter of inadequate classrooms to the notice of the higher authorities of the Education Department, but to no avail. The location of the school is in itself is a big hindrance and expanding infrastructure or a classroom is practically not possible here.”

Hardeep Singh, District Education Officer (Elementary), said, “If there is requirement then we must ensure that an adequate number of classrooms are provided to the school. Moreover, we also ask the respective principals and heads of government schools to state their requirements to meet infrastructural shortage so that we can address them on a priority basis.”
