Members of the TET-Qualified Unemployed Teachers’ Union burnt an effigy of the state Education Minister at Fauji Chowk here on Sunday.

Raising slogans against the state government during the protest, they said their genuine demands regarding recruitment of teachers must be fulfilled on priority.

Yudhjit Singh, president of district unit of the union, said: “When we cleared the TET, the minimum percentage required was 50 and 45 per cent for students belonging to the general and reserved categories, respectively. The state government recently amended the fixed criteria. Now, the minimum percentage to apply for a government job is 55 per cent. It is against the guidelines of the Union Government.”

“We have been working on quite low salaries for the past eight years, but the government has not regularised our services till date,” he said.

Notably, members of the union have been staging parallel protests against the government across various districts of the state. The teachers’ union has been continuing with their indefinite protest at Sangrur for the past 60 days now and has decided to continue with it until the state government relents and fulfills their demands.

Meanwhile, demanding regular jobs with full pay scale, district unit of the union at Mansa also conducted a protest and burnt the effigy of Education Minister. The protesters gathered near Sewa Singh Thikriwala Chowk in Mansa and raised slogans against the Education Minister and the state government for maintaining silence on the matter.
