After the Congress government came to power, the state police had claimed that tough action would be taken against drug and illicit liquor peddlers.

In Bathinda zone, between March 16 to June 22, 886 cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and 1,108 accused arrested by the police. As many as 1,022 cases were registered under the Excise Act while 1,091 accused were arrested.

Bathinda, Mansa, Muktsar, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Fazilka and Moga district are in Bathinda zone which includes Bathinda Range and the Ferozepur Range.

Inspector General, Bathinda Zone, today said that the police had taken tough action against drug peddlers and clear instructions had been issued by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh in this regard. “We have broken the chain of drug peddlers and arrested 1,108 accused while 886 cases have been registered under the NDPS Act,” he said.

IG MS Chhina said 5.220 kg of heroin was recovered by the Bathinda Zone police while Bathinda district is on number one position, where the police recovered 1.528 kg of heroin.

In Bathinda, the supply of heroin takes place mostly from Delhi and the police had arrested two Nigerians in this connection. As many as 207 cases have been registered in Bathinda under the NDPS Act and 260 accused arrested.

The police recovered 51.330 kg of opium and 5461.850 kg of poppy husk. IG Chhina said peddling of opium and poppy husk has been taking place from Rajasthan and Haryana as the borders of these states are attached with Bathinda, Mansa, Mukatsar and Fazilka districts. “But we have made strict arrangements on the state borders and every vehicle is being checked by the police while entering the area,” he said.

IG Chinna said the police also recovered 717 gm of smack, 8,31,769 of intoxicant pills, 11.103 kg of ganja, 2,864 intoxicant injections, 2,485 bottles of intoxicant syrup, 6.417 kg of intoxicant powder, 100 gm of bhaang and 1.500 litres of intoxicant narcotic liquid.

The police have also registered 1,022 cases under Excise Act and 1,091 accused have been arrested with a huge quantity of illicit liquor and Lahan. In Bathinda, 338 cases has been registered under the Excise Act and 342 accused have been arrested, the IG informed.
