34 scholars take part in course on research methodology

A 10-day research methodology course was inaugurated at the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development (CRRID) here today.

The course has been sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). Prof VK Malhotra, Member Secretary, ICSSR, New Delhi, was the keynote speaker.

Malhotra dwelt on the condition and relevance of social science research in India. He outlined strategies for improving the quality of social enquiry. He highlighted the unpredictable nature of social science as compared to natural sciences. He referred to value addition beyond the intermediate level in the Indian system of education and urged to set the anomaly right.

He discussed the emerging situation of the social science research and the role of Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development in promoting research in the north-west India. Prof Aswini K Nanda, course Co-Director, outlined the contents of the course.

The course is being attended by 34 PhD scholars from across the country. The scholars are from various social science disciplines such as economics, commerce, management, anthropology and sociology. The resource persons for the course are reputed academicians from institutions such as IGIDR, Mumbai; GIDR, Ahmedabad; TISS, Mumbai; IIT, Ropar; Population Council, New Delhi; Central University of Punjab, Bathinda; and Panjab University, Chandigarh.

The course covers recent advances in qualitative and quantitative techniques of social science research that are highly relevant field studies, case studies, data analytics and academic publications.
