The Citi Entertainment Network teamed up with the Theatre Arts to staged a socially relevant Hindi play, ‘Violence’, at the Sector 17 Plaza in Chandigarh today. Women empowerment was the theme of the play.

Written by Nitu Sharma and directed by Anjali Sharma, the play depicted the dilemma of two young subjugated women—Seema and Sakina— who belong to two different communities and faced oppression by their husbands.

In the opening episode, young Seema was tortured by her husband Ashok to undergo a sex determination test as he wanted a male child. But, she refuses to do so and threatens to inform the police.

In the second part, the play depicted the ordeal of a young divorced Muslim women, Sakina, forced to marry an aged maulavi. The maulavi refuses to send Sakina’s daughter to the school and mistreats them.

He used to beat them up on one pretext or the other, but finally Sakina musters the courage and takes on the maulavi. She beats him badly to teach him a lesson. She declares that women should never be considered weak and given secondary status in society.

Nitu Sharma played the roles of Seema and Sakina while Gaurav Sharma essayed the roles of Ashok and maulavi.
