Chandigarh, January 19

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of teachers, Chandigarh, today announced that all teachers working in government schools will observe a non-instructional day (chalk-down strike) tomorrow. They are protesting against the incident in which a Class XII student allegedly punched a teacher on the school premises on Thursday.

Bhag Singh Kairon, president of the committee, said they had requested all government schoolteachers to observe a chalk-down strike tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the school submitted a report to the office of District Education Officer Anujit Kaur today in which the student was indicted. The boy did not come to the school today.

“In the report, the boy has been indicted. Earlier also, he had misbehaved with teachers and had been warned too. He had apologised for his behaviour in the past. It has come out that he was drunk on Thursday,” said the DEO.

She said there was resentment among teachers over the incident. The boy is four days short of turning 18.

The UT Cadre Educational Employees Union met Rubinderjit Brar, Director, School Education, in connection with the incident.

The union demanded strict action against the student as per law by not treating him a juvenile. It also demanded action against the school principal, who had given higher classes to a junior teacher.

DEO for action against student

We will recommend action against the student. Either he will be suspended and given a chance for reformation or his name will be struck off. The final decision will be taken by the Director, School Education. — Anujit Kaur, DEO
