Chandigarh, January 12

The kin of 75-year-old Subodh Kumar Gupta, who was killed in a hit-and-run at Sector 10 in August last year, along with others, carried out a protest march from Sector 10 to the Police Headquarters in Sector 9 here today. They were protesting the callous attitude of the UT police that has failed to re-arrest the accused who was later booked under Section 304-II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC.

The incident had taken place on the road opposite the Sector 10 market.

Gupta, a resident of Sector 4, was trying to cross the road when an SUV, driven by Harjasneet Singh Chahal, 27, a resident of Bathinda, hit him. The incident was recorded on a CCTV camera. The accused was arrested a few days later and released on bail.

Neeti Goyal, the victim’s daughter, said the accused was earlier booked under Section 304-A (causing death due to negligence) of the IPC, which was a bailable offence. On their demand, Section 304-II was added to the case in September. “Since then, the cops have failed to re-arrest the accused,” she added.

A delegation also met Eish Singhal, who is officiating as the UT SSP, and submitted a memorandum for speedy action.
