After some MBBS students of the newly built boys’ hostel at Government Medical College got stuck in a lift last week, the college principal has ordered immediate shut down of all lifts in hostels.

The move comes after two MBBS students got trapped in lift at the newly constructed Block-D of the boys’ hostel for hours on December 11.

Principal Dr BS Sidhu has directed to close all newly installed lifts in boys’ and girls’ hostels till further orders. The notice of shutting down the lifts has been pasted on the lift itself — citing an unspecified mechanical defect.

Sources said lifts were not running properly ever since the hostel was opened this year.

Dr DS Bhullar, Hostel Superintendent (Boys), said, “The matter of faulty lifts in boys’ hostel has been already brought to the notice of the authorities concerned, but no action has been taken to fix the problem. I think the authorities should take action at the earliest so as to avoid any untoward incident.”

He said, “We will also request the authorities to appoint operators for hostel lifts, who would work round the clock.”
