Chandigarh, June 13

There seems to be no end to the UT Sports Department’s troubles when it comes to managing the newly-built indoor sports complexes in the city.

Already facing staff crunch, the Sports Department will have to battle the unavailability of badminton coach at its Sector 34 Sports Complex from June 30.

The appointed coach, who was on a training period, will reportedly leave the job to pursue higher studies.

“The coach will stay only till June 30. After that the department will start the process to hire a new coach,” said a source privy to the development.

The Sector 34 Complex was opened for general public last month, after 30 days of its inauguration.

The sports stadium at Mani Majra is also under lock since it’s opening on May 25.

The sports complexes at Sector 50 and Sector 37 are also nearing completion and are likely to be inaugurated soon. “The department is already facing staff crunch and the upcoming complexes will add to its burden,” said the source.

Earlier, the Sports Department had drawn flak from the members for failing to start the swimming centre.

Built at a cost of Rs 8 crore, the Sector 34 Sports Complex offers facilities for wrestlers and judokas, besides housing a swimming pool and table tennis, badminton and squash courts.

Last year, it was decided that the complex would be maintained by the Sports Department with financial assistance from the Education Department.
