Mohali, May 21

Residents of Sectors 68 and 69 staged a protest outside the GMADA office in Phase VIII here demanding adequate water supply. They also protested against water tariff hike in certain sectors of Mohali.

The protesters said at least 4 out of 14 tubewells run by GMADA were non-operational.

Satvir Singh Dhanoa, area councillor, said: “Water tariff rates should be rationalised and brought on a par with tariffs in other sectors.”

Local councillor Bobby Kamboj said: “Water bills have increased by 300-400 per cent due to tariff hike. People are paying more for less water. Pressure on upper floors is low.”

Residents submitted a memorandum of demands to GMADA officials.

In September 2017, GMADA had hiked tariff rates in Sectors 66-69, 76-80, Aero City and Eco City, according to which residents would have to pay Rs 5 per kilolitre for consumption up to 20 kilolitres and Rs 10 per kilolitre for consumption exceeding 20 kilolitres, as compared to the earlier flat rate of Rs 1.8 per kilolitre.
