Customs sleuths recovered 20 gold biscuits, worth around Rs 76 lakh, from the Dubai-Chandigarh flight at the international airport here today.

A passenger, Raj Kumar (35), who belongs to Mansa, was nabbed in this connection. Sources said he confessed that the gold belonged to him.

During a checking of the plane, officials found a black cloth containing pockets in which the gold biscuits were found. The gold biscuits were wrapped in a black tape and concealed in a cavity near a passenger seat.

“The weight of each gold biscuit is 116 gm. During investigation, it was found that Raj Kumar was occupying the seat in which the gold was hidden,” said the sources.

An official said Raj Kumar was intercepted by customs officials after monitoring his suspicious body language.

Raj Kumar is said to be a frequent visitor to Dubai. The sources said this was his fourth visit in the past few days. Legal proceedings have been initiated into the matter.

Gold jewellery seized

On a tip-off, the police seized gold jewellery worth Rs 26.86 lakh at the airport on Tuesday. Airport SHO Baljeet Sing said they received information that Ashna Manhas, who had arrived by an IndiGo flight from Delhi, was carrying gold jewellery, weighing 890 gm. “After being intercepted, she could not produce any document regarding the jewellery, which was seized,” said the SHO.
